Guide to reporting on public companies

This website is a guide for reporters reporting on companies that are publicly traded or have public securities.

Corporations usually share only what they need to on their operations or performance but the information that’s required to be disclosed can often provide enough insight to include in stories on publicly traded companies.

This is the case for most companies but companies that raise funds through offerings of stocks, or securities that the public can access have to report certain financial and operational information to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

To find information on companies that are publicly traded or use public fundraising methods go to the SEC’s EDGAR website, or the Electronic Data Gathering Analysis and Retrieval system, which contains most forms and disclosures. https://www.sec.gov/edgar/search/

This information can be used to find how much money a company made or lost, what is driving profits or losses, and how a company views risks and opportunities for its future.

To find a specific company go to the text search page on the EDGAR website and enter a company’s name or stock ticker symbol.

You can specify what you are looking for by only viewing certain documents that contain specific information and by entering a date range for what information you are looking for, these steps can make search results cleaner and easier to navigate. You can also enter key phrases to look for in these documents, for example you can see when Apple mentions its Vision Pro VR headset to see how the company is framing the device's launch to its investors.
